Effects of prenatal and early childhood exposure to ambient air pollution on the human gut microbiome and corresponding consequences on cardiovascular function.

Air pollution exposure is detrimental to human health as shown by many studies. To date, the effect of ambient air pollution on the gut microbiome in children and related cardiovascular health effects remain elusive due to a lack of studies. During my PhD, I aim to investigate the effects of prenatal and early childhood air pollution exposure on the gut microbiome alpha diversity and composition. Another objective of my research is to study whether air pollution-related particles can reach the intestines. Further, I aim to examine the effect of an altered gut microbiome on the cardiovascular phenotype.
