This longitudinal study aims to investigate the influence of environmental exposures during pregnancy and early life on the health of children.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e7bebf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6e7bebf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why is ENVIR<i>ON<\/i>AGE relevant?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7dfe0e2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7dfe0e2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Environmental factors, such as air pollution and nutrition, can affect the fetal health during the prenatal period. The importance of the prenatal health has been hypothesised by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/view\/10.1093\/oi\/authority.20110803095447459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Barker<\/a>, and is now known as the 'developmental origins of health and disease', or DOHaD for short. Hitherto it is commonly known that age-related disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases, dementia and diabetes arise early in life.<\/p><p>ENVIR<em>ON<\/em>AGE investigates the underlying mechanisms of these age-related disorders. By studying newborns and children, we aim to find predictive markers of ageing, which are linked to environmental exposures.<\/p><p>Furthermore, we can spearhead innovative strategies and specific applications in environmental healthcare to protect unborn children against environmental exposures. After delivery, the mother fills out an extensive\u00a0<strong>questionnaire<\/strong> regarding in-house environment, education, occupancy, health status, stress, smoking and life-style habits. Information about\u00a0<strong>growth, length, weight and waist circumference<\/strong>\u00a0is also collected.<\/li><li><strong>Heart rate<\/strong>\u00a0is monitored during the clinical examination via the small, portable wireless Zephyr Biopatch that is attached to the participant's chest by two standard ECG electrodes. Different parameters of\u00a0<strong>heart rate variability<\/strong>\u00a0(e.g. SDNN) are extracted based on these measurements.<\/li><li><strong>Retinal photography<\/strong>\u00a0provides a non-invasive, in vivo, method to characterize the\u00a0<strong>human microvasculature<\/strong>\u00a0since retinal vessels are 60-300 \u00b5m in diameter. For each participant, the fundus of both right and left eye is photographed in a darkened room using a Canon 45\u00b0 6.3-megapixel digital nonmydriatic camera. PWA analyses arterial pressure waves at different vessel sites to measure arterial stiffness. AIX refers to the bouncing waves that contribute to the pressure at the base of the aorta. When the pressure pulse travels from the heart's ventricle throughout the body's arteries, it encounters obstacles that can lead to some of the pressure to bounce back as waves. PWV determines the speed of pressure pulse propagation from the heart to the peripheral arteries.<\/li><li>The child's\u00a0<b>microcirculation<\/b>\u00a0is assessed using transcutaneous oximetry (tcpO2) and Laser Doppler technology, using three probes on the forearm to monitor local tissue oxygen tension and blood perfusion simultaneously.<\/li><li>Greenteq's CALERA Research sensor monitors <strong>core body temperature<\/strong> non-invasively. The device is attached with a small patch to the left side of the child's chest, near the heart. The sensor measures skin temperature and heat flow to accurately determine core body temperature, independent of outside temperature and activity levels. Core body temperature is an important health indicator linked to the capacity of the body to regulate heat, metabolism, and cardiovascular health.<\/li><li>The NeXus |10 MKII from Mindmedia is an advanced multimodal device capable of tracking various physiological signals at high resolution. The signals are mainly related to the correct functioning of the cardiovascular system. Examples are <strong>skin conductance, heart rate<\/strong><strong>, and relative blood flow<\/strong>, which are measured using specialised sensors: galvanic skin response (GSR) sensors and blood volume pulse (BVP) sensors. These sensors are placed on specific fingers of the non-dominant hand, ensuring a painless and comfortable way to monitor these important signals.<\/li><li><strong>Cognitive performance<\/strong> of the study participants is assessed using the <strong>Mental Information processing and Neuropsychological Diagnostic System<\/strong> (MINDS), investigating measures for (sustained) attention, reaction time, visual memory and executive function.<\/li><li><strong>Bone density<\/strong>\u00a0is determined in a non-invasive, radiation-free manner based on the quantification of axial ultrasound transmission determined at the lower forearm, using the BeamMed Sunlight MiniOmni.<\/li><li><strong>Cardiovascular parameters related to stress<\/strong> are tracked for a week in participating children's daily lives. The EmbracePlus (Empatica Inc.) is a smartwatch designed for continuous health monitoring, utilising advanced medical-grade sensors to generate real-time data on cardiovascular health and stress responses. A ventral EDA sensor detects small changes in the skin's electrical conductivity, while an advanced optimal photoplethysmography measure changes in blood flow through light absorption to calculate pulse rate and rate variability. A digital skin temperature sensor determines peripheral skin temperature, and built-in motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) monitor physical activity. Unlike during lab tests, this device captures cardiovascular responses in real-world conditions, resulting in more accurate information on daily health and stress levels.<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Biological samples<\/span><\/p><ul><li>A <strong>skin swab<\/strong> (Flocked swab, Copan Diagnostics Inc.) is taken from the forehead to study the skin
